Object-based Image Retrieval

March-June 2010
Composite Object-based Image Retrieval
Supervisor of master's student Ji Ye, for the Software Project course
When people search for images they are often interested in finding those that contain one or more particular objects in a specific arrangement. In this project an image retrieval system is developed where a user can compose an image by dragging objects onto a canvas and arranging them so that it matches the scene that the user has in mind. The retrieval system then uses this composite image to find images of interest in a large collection of web images.

Warping Time and Space: Spatiotemporal Disruptive Imaging

22 and 29 August 2007, 19 and 29 March 2010
Warping Time and Space: Spatiotemporal Disruptive Imaging
A two-day workshop for the Media Technology program. Lecturing together with Maarten Lamers.
Learning to understand the relation between time and space in images taken over time, and how this can disrupt our preconception of time-space. Besides showing many examples and artworks for each of the possible techniques that can be used for creating spatiotemporally distorted images, students will create their own time-warped images.

Infinite Nothingness

Spring semester 2008
Infinite Nothingness
Supervisor of second semester Media Technology project, together with Amalia Kallergi
This project, created by Mario Ruiz, Clintonne Kip and Aggelos Bousmpouras, tries to illustrate through the use of the vanishing point principle that nothing can be infinity and that infinity can be nothing. Starting from a (zero dimensional) point, fractal worlds are unveiled. They are hidden behind a seeming nothingness, each one with its own soundscape, and unfold into new worlds and new sounds… ad infinitum.

Wheel of Fortune: Why Spin?

Spring semester 2007
Wheel of Fortune: Why Spin?
Supervisor of second semester Media Technology project, together with Mark Huiskes
This project, created by Karel van den Aarsen, Marian Maas and David van Paesschen, appears to be a traditional wheel of fortune on first sight. However, after spinning the wheel a few times you'll notice that your score isn't nowhere as high as other players. Soon enough though you'll discover how to manipulate the game to get you near the top of the highscore ranking. Is this cheating, or just exploiting a feature?
