Master Computer Science
Computer Science is a full-time 120 EC 2-year Master programme.
There are 5 possible tracks:
- Core Computer Technologies, related to the research groups:
- Computer Systems - prof.dr. Ed DePrettere & prof.dr. Harry Wijshoff
- Imagery & Media - dr. Michael Lew & dr.ir. Fons Verbeek
- Computer Science Theory and Advanced Technologies, related to the research groups:
- Algorithms - prof.dr. Thomas Bäck & prof.dr. Joost Kok
- Foundations of Software Technology - prof.dr. Farhad Arbab & prof.dr. Joost Kok
- Bioinformatics
- Computer Science and Science Based Business (partially Dutch)
- Computer Science and Communication (partially Dutch)
Programme outline
The programme for tracks 1 and 2 consists of the following:- Specialization Courses (60 EC) or Specialization courses (42 EC) and Software Project/Project Study (18 EC)
- Research Project (18 EC)
- Master Graduation Project (42 EC)

Graduation Procedure
The formal date of graduation is the date on which you have met all the requirements of the MSc in Computer Science program. This date is recorded in your transcripts and also on your diploma. This date coincides with the date on which you have received a satisfactory grade for the last required component of your approved program of study.
Students who are close to graduation can apply for participation in the Master’s Graduation Ceremony. The Graduation Ceremony takes place five times a year. In this ceremony you will receive the MSc in Computer Science diploma from the Examination Board. Friends and family are more than welcome to witness this formal and festive occasion.

Application for Graduation
Students who are close to graduation, apply for the Master’s Graduation Ceremony in the following way:
- Contact dr. J.M. de Graaf (academic adviser) or Riet Derogee (program coordinator) who will verify that you have met (or soon will meet) the requirements of your approved program of study.
- At the latest five weeks before your chosen date of the Master’s Graduation Ceremony, submit your application to Mrs. Bertie ten Hove, the secretary of the Educational Centre (Dutch: Educatief Centrum, Huygens laboratorium, 1st floor, room 123) by providing her with:
- Bachelor’s degree certificate
- A proof of admission to the master’s programme
- A copy of your passport /ID if your former education was not at the faculty of science in Leiden.
- Proof of registration at the university (Dutch: collegekaart)
- Hand in in an electronic version of your Master Thesis (including cover page, which is available at the Documents page) and send it by e-mail to the secretary Marloes van der Nat (room 155, Snelius Building). She also provides the "internal report number" that is needed on the cover page of the thesis.
- At the latest three weeks before your chosen date of the Master’s Graduation Ceremony, all examination results should be handed in to Mrs. B. ten Hove of the Educational Centre (including the grades for your master’s thesis or other projects or course work).
Master "old style" / Doctoraal
There have been some minor changes to the Master Computer Science programme.
