Professor T. Head (State University of New York at Binghamton, USA) will spend two months, in the period May 23-July 27, 1998, in Leiden as the Pascal Professor at the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science (LIACS). Professor Head is one of the pioneers of the new linkage of computation theory and biotechnology. He will present an introductory series of lectures on DNA Computing as introduced by Leonard Adleman. DNA Computing is an emerging interdisciplinary area where one investigates the use of DNA molecules and enzymes as a biological hardware (bioware) for the implementation of algorithms.

Professor Head will give a series of Pascal lectures on 'DNA Computing - Design of Experiments'. The dates for the lectures are: June 3, June 17, June 24, July 1, from 14.00 until 16.00.

The lectures are self-contained, with the first lecture giving the necessary background from molecular biology. The lectures are oriented at, and accessible for, computer scientists and molecular biologists that want to learn (more) about this exciting research area. This is really a unique chance to attend a course on the experiments in DNA Computing!

In the same period the Leiden Centre for Natural Computing organizes the Ongoing Workshop on DNA Computing. The idea of this workshop is to bring together researchers from the area of DNA Computing. Their visits, on the average about one week, will overlap. We hope that in this way contacts between researchers from different research instututes in different countries will be established. We believe that these contacts will enhance the research on DNA Computing. Among the researchers visiting Leiden in this period are some of the most prominent researchers in DNA Computing:

G. Alford, M. Amos, K. Erk, C. Ferretti, R. Freund, M. Garzon, N. Jonoska, L. Kari, S. Kobayashi, L. Landweber, G. Mauri, J. McCaskill, G. Paun, H. Rubin, A. Salomaa, E. Winfree, D. Wood.

Their lectures will cover a broad spectrum of DNA Computing ranging from formal theories to the design of experiments that should eventually lead to DNA computers. Most of the lectures will take place during two 'concentration' weeks: [1] June 29 - July 3, and [2] July 13 - July 17, 1998.

The scientific program of these weeks provides a unique chance to learn about the foundations of DNA Computing as well as to learn about the current trends in this area of research. The program is directed towards both computer scientists and molecular biologists. In order to make the lectures better accessible for both groups, on Monday two tutorials are given: one on the basic molecular biology for computer scientists, and the other one on basic models of computation for biologists.

The Ongoing Workshop on DNA Computing is sponsored by the Lorentz Center of Leiden University, Leiden Institute for Advanced Computer Science, and the Institute for Programming research and Algorithmics (IPA).

Anybody interested in, or wanting to learn about DNA Computing, is welcome in Leiden in this period. If you want to receive more specific information about the above mentioned activities, then please contact G. Rozenberg (rozenber@wi.leidenuniv.nl, telephone: +31-71-5277061), or H.J. Hoogeboom (hoogeboo@wi.leidenuniv.nl, telephone: +31-71-5277062).

We look forward to hear from you.
